A sign of the times?

So it’s the holidays, right? And with the holiday season comes holiday parties. And with holiday parties comes cooking and baking and the bringing of food from people’s homes to share with one another. I’m cool with that. I participate in that. In fact, this week, I have been doing a LOT of that.

This week alone I have had had to cook for two different events at work. I don’t mind it, but I did notice something yesterday that really caught me off guard.

Now…I will be the first to admit that many of the things I make to take to these kinds of functions are not strictly “homemade” as in all the raw ingredients were assembled into something yummy by me. Sometimes, like with brownies, I cheat and use a box of brownie mix.

Tuesday night I did make homemade Andes mint chip cookies from scratch, but last night I made pasta salad out of the box.

I don’t feel badly about it. I mean, for me to go and buy the noodles and veggies and the powders to make the bacony-ranch flavor that went on it, it just wouldn’t be cost effective. So I use the box.

Boxed cooking is not what I have a problem with. What I have a problem with are the directions on the box.

Last night, as I was preparing a double batch of this pasta salad, I noticed that the “basic directions” on the side panel of the box were microwave directions, and the “alternative” directions were stove top ones.

Come on, people! Does no one cook with their stoves any more? Have we all gone the way of fast zapping and microwaving? I know we are a rushed and time crunched society, but doesn’t anyone take the time to cook something on the stove?

I know I have no business griping about this when I admit to using boxed foods for baking and cooking, but I guess I get sad when I see everything in our society going so technological. I figured at least our home cooked food would be immune to the fast pace of our society, but I guess I was wrong.

Basic Directions for cooking should NOT include the microwave unless it is microwave popcorn! Seriously!
