Today was the Downtown Terre Haute Winter Farmer’s Market, and I just had to go.
I can’t believe it, but I had never actually gone to one of the winter farmer’s markets. Because I manage the Healthy Hoosiers CSA, one of our city’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, I rarely go to the summer farmer’s market and the winter farmer’s market pretty much escapes my memory!
The Downtown Terre Haute Winter Farmer’s Market can be found inside of the Clabber Girl museum and bake shop. It’s a really great way to bring local food into the community and partner with a Terre Haute icon: Clabber Girl. The winter market had a really nice feel to it, and I am so glad I went!

I saw quite a few people there that I know, both as vendors and as shoppers! Because I manage a CSA, much of the local food community are people that I’ve gotten to know.
I am doing a Pantry Challenge this month and the only things I am hoping to buy are fresh produce, dairy and breads, so I thought the winter farmer’s market would be a great place to stop and see what’s available locally. I often do much of my shopping at Kroger, but as we start working toward eating more Real Food I am hoping the summer and winter farmer’s markets, along with my produce share from the CSA, will replace some of what I buy commercially now.
I picked up some local honey for my daughter who suffers from terrible allergies that we have not identified yet. We’re not exactly sure what environmental factor is causing the problem, but we’re going to try local honey as a new “medicine” for her. Now, I just have to keep hubby away from the “medicine”, ha!

I talked to the bee keeper and the lady I assume is his wife. They said that wildflower honey is the best kind for allergies, and to make sure to take it all year – not just during the “allergy seasons”. The bee keeper also mentioned that local honey for Terre Haute is harder to find now, because many bee keepers lost their bees due to the extreme drought this summer which affected plants and flowers that bees need access to.
I hope to be able to get out to more of the winter markets this year and learn more about the farmers and vendors there. They had vendors with everything from local meat to local produce, grains, breads, jams, handmade card and goods… and so much more! The Downtown Terre Haute Winter Farmer’s Market is the first Saturday morning of each month (Nov to May) at Clabber Girl.

Does your city have a winter farmer’s market, or are you lucky enough to live somewhere with a “regular” farmer’s market all year?
